At the top of the Amoreiras Towers, the Amoreiras 360° Panoramic View reveals Lisbon in a way the city rarely allows itself to be seen: whole, wide and surprisingly legible. At 174 metres above sea level, on one of the highest points in the city, this viewpoint offers a continuous reading of the Tagus, São Jorge Castle, the Águas Livres Aqueduct, the Estrela Basilica and the rolling shape of Lisbon’s hills. More than a simple lookout, it is a place that helps you understand the scale and variety of the capital, between old neighbourhoods, major monuments and areas of urban expansion. Set within the Amoreiras Towers complex, opened in 1985 and awarded the Valmor Prize, it has earned a distinctive place in the city’s skyline. It is worth using the viewing scopes and following the maps slowly: from above, Lisbon seems to arrange itself before your eyes, as if the whole city became, for a moment, clearer.

Why it matters

Amoreiras 360° Panoramic View occupies the top of the Amoreiras Towers, a complex inaugurated in September 1985 that left a lasting mark on Lisbon’s skyline. Its position on elevated ground gave the site an immediate visual presence in the city, reinforced by a postmodern language that provoked debate and became recognisable to those arriving in the capital. Over time, the complex established itself as one of Lisbon’s architectural landmarks from the late twentieth century and received the Valmor and Municipal Architecture Prize in 1993. The viewpoint grows out of that condition as an urban landmark and turns it into a public experience of observation. From here, the city is no longer seen only from afar but can be read as a continuous whole, from the hills to the rooftops and from the Tagus to the major monuments. Set at one of Lisbon’s highest points and 174 metres above sea level, Amoreiras 360° now stands as a place for panoramic reading of the capital.

Architecture and history

More than a panoramic platform, this viewpoint depends on the architecture of the building that carries it and on its commanding place within Lisbon’s topography. Access is made through the shopping centre and leads to an elevated terrace that opens the view in every direction, without favouring a single frame. That complete openness is its defining feature. Rather than isolating one monument, the space allows Lisbon’s territorial structure to be understood as a continuous whole of hills, road axes, riverside fronts and districts from different periods. The shape of the tower tops, often associated with a strong sculptural image, also helps the viewpoint function as a natural extension of the building itself. On the terrace, long-range telescopes and interpretive maps help identify urban and historic references, turning observation into an act of orientation. The architecture of the place therefore lies less in decoration than in the relationship between height, exposure, horizon and the reading of the built city.

More context

The line of the Tagus is one of the first things to focus on, because it organises much of the panorama and helps explain how Lisbon historically opened towards the river. From there, it becomes easy to locate the 25 de Abril Bridge, Cristo Rei, São Jorge Castle, Lisbon Cathedral, Estrela Basilica, the Mãe de Água, Jerónimos Monastery, Ajuda National Palace and, in the distance, the Vasco da Gama Bridge. In the opposite direction, Monsanto introduces a broad green presence within the capital and helps balance the reading between built city and natural landscape. It is also worth observing the sequence of hills and the way very different districts connect through rooftops, avenues and monumental axes. The telescopes and maps do more than identify well-known buildings. They allow comparisons of distance, scale and relationships between the historic centre, the riverside front and more recent expansions. At this viewpoint, what most rewards the eye is precisely this broad reading of Lisbon as an urban territory seen in continuity.
