Jardim do Torel has the discretion of places that do not impose themselves and, for that very reason, stay in the memory. Born on the grounds of an early eighteenth-century estate, it takes its name from the magistrate Cunha Thorel and became a public garden and viewpoint when the site was handed to the City Council in 1928. Today, among trees, shade and a sheltered atmosphere, it opens onto a broad view over the valley of Avenida da Liberdade, the hill of São Roque and part of old Lisbon. Around it, the noble houses of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries deepen the feeling of an urban retreat, almost secret. Reaching it by the Lavra funicular or by Rua do Telhal is part of the charm: the approach prepares the surprise. More than a simple viewpoint, Torel keeps the quiet elegance of a less hurried Lisbon, where the city seems to reveal itself slowly.

Why it matters

Set above the eastern slope of Avenida da Liberdade, Jardim do Torel began as part of an old estate dating from the early eighteenth century. Its name preserves the memory of the magistrate Cunha Thorel, identified by Lisbon City Council as the wealthiest owner in this area. For a long period, the site remained private, connected to the palace and to the grounds on the hillside. In January 1928, the palace grounds were transferred to Lisbon City Council, which turned them into the public garden and viewpoint seen today. That change gave the city a new place from which to look over the central valley, in an area already marked by mansions and noble houses. Its connection with the rest of Lisbon became even clearer because of its proximity to the Lavra Funicular, inaugurated in 1884 and still one of the most characteristic ways of reaching this hill. In 2008, the garden was refurbished, including a new public lighting system, which strengthened its use later in the day. Since then, it has remained a panoramic refuge in the centre of Lisbon.

Architecture and history

More than a small neighbourhood garden, Torel works as an urban balcony above the lower city. The SIPA inventory describes it as beginning with a broad and quadrangular forecourt, centred on a large water bowl, a solution that orders the entrance and gives the space a clear axis. From that nucleus, the layout uses the slope to alternate open areas for viewing with more sheltered paths shaded by trees. In Lisbon’s Municipal Heritage Charter, both the garden and the viewpoint are identified, and within them an eighteenth-century ornamental tank is also listed, signalling the site’s age. The place is also read through its built surroundings. The façades and gardens of the mansions on Rua Júlio de Andrade and nearby streets show that this is not an isolated green space, but part of an older residential landscape. A municipal planning report underlines exactly that role, stating that Torel organises a group of private gardens of considerable size and landscape importance.

More context

The central water bowl is the best starting point for reading the garden, because it fixes the composition and recalls the presence of the old ornamental tank. Then move towards the viewpoint railing and follow the line of the valley. From here, Avenida da Liberdade, São Jorge Castle, the hill of São Roque and a broad stretch of western Lisbon become legible. The contrast between the more open belvedere area and the tree-shaded sections also deserves attention, as it gives Torel the character of a secluded garden despite its wide view. Along the edges, notice the frame of noble houses and nineteenth-century mansions, which preserves the residential atmosphere of the hillside. Among the quieter features, there is also the bust of Viana da Mota, the composer and pianist honoured by the city. Finally, there is an unusual detail in Lisbon: in summer, the central fountain can be adapted as a temporary public pool, extending the garden’s relationship with water.
