From the top of the São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint, Lisbon opens out like a city built in layers. Part of António Nobre Garden, this romantic space is arranged on two terraces linked by stairs and offers one of the broadest panoramas in the capital, from São Jorge Castle and the Cathedral to Baixa, Graça and the valley of Avenida da Liberdade. The power of the place lies both in the view and in the way it frames it. On the upper terrace, among trees and a central fountain, a tile panel designed by Fred Kradolfer helps visitors identify the main landmarks in the landscape. On the lower level, geometric flowerbeds and busts of historical figures and characters from classical mythology extend the atmosphere of romantic Lisbon. More than a viewing point, this is a place that invites you to pause, direct your gaze and understand the city with time and attention.

Why it matters

Better known as the São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint, this place is officially called Jardim António Nobre and occupies a strategic position between Bairro Alto and the slope of Glória. The structure that supports it dates back to the mid eighteenth century, when King João V ordered the construction of the great wall on which the garden would later stand. The public and landscaped form recognised today took shape in the nineteenth century, when the space was organised into two terraces facing the city. In 1885, the inauguration of the Glória Funicular strengthened the connection between the viewpoint and Restauradores and made this urban balcony even more accessible. A few years later, the site also acquired a commemorative role. In 1904, the monument to Eduardo Coelho, founder of Diário de Notícias, was erected there. Today, the garden remains one of Lisbon’s most emblematic viewpoints, not only because of the view, but also because it brings together public promenade, civic memory and landscape design.

Architecture and history

The composition of the viewpoint rests on a very clear solution. Two terraces are linked by stone stairways and organise different uses without breaking the unity of the whole. On the upper level, trees, circulation paths, the central lake and the tile panel reproducing the panorama seen from the site are the dominant features. This level works as a shaded antechamber to the view and preserves the scale of a more secluded garden. The lower terrace opens much more directly towards the city. There, geometric flowerbeds, a more regular design and a series of busts set on high plinths bring together themes from classical antiquity and from the history of Portugal. The combination of vegetation, stairways, water, tilework and sculpture gives the space a theatrical quality, reinforced by the long railing facing the valley. Its relationship with the urban fabric is also important, because the viewpoint forms a transition between Calçada da Glória, Bairro Alto and the built front of São Pedro de Alcântara.

More context

The tile panel on the upper terrace helps identify what appears on the horizon and is one of the most useful keys for reading the landscape. From that point, follow the line of Avenida da Liberdade towards Restauradores and Baixa, then lift your gaze to the hill of São Jorge Castle, with its clearly defined walls, and to the viewpoint and church of Graça. On the same upper level, the central lake and the trees create an interesting contrast between a place to linger and a panoramic balcony. Going down to the lower terrace, notice the geometry of the flowerbeds and the ensemble of decorative busts. Among the figures represented are Luís de Camões, João de Barros, Pedro Álvares Cabral and Afonso de Albuquerque, alongside classical references. At one end, the monument to Eduardo Coelho recalls the civic dimension of the garden. It is also worth noticing how the arrival of the Glória Funicular frames the viewpoint as a gateway to this upper front of the city.
