The Museu da Água e Resíduos, in Ribeira de Sintra, is managed by SMAS de Sintra and is dedicated to environmental education and awareness. Installed in the former tram garage, it occupies a building linked to the history of the line that connected Sintra to Colares and Praia das Maçãs. Its technical memory remains visible: essential parts of the structure have been integrated into interactive modules, such as the original pulley system, once used to lift coal wagons and heavy materials. The route combines indoor and outdoor areas, bringing themes such as the urban water cycle, recycling, waste and sustainability closer through games, models and tactile experiences. Among the most expressive elements are the interactive model of the urban water cycle, the modules on waste separation and the outdoor tank reused for water-related experiments. The museum turns infrastructure and pedagogy into a practical reading of environmental heritage.

Why it matters

The Museum of Water and Waste, known as MAR, was inaugurated in July 2024 in Ribeira de Sintra, marking a pioneering step in environmental education in Portugal. Promoted by Sintra’s Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS), this project embodies the region’s growing commitment to sustainability and public awareness of current environmental challenges. The museum is housed in the former Sintra electric tram garage, a historic building dating back to 1901 that played a significant role in local transport throughout the 20th century. Its restoration preserved a valuable piece of industrial heritage while transforming it into a centre for environmental innovation and civic engagement.

Architecture and history

The museum’s architecture stands out for its successful fusion of historical preservation and modern functionality. The original garage structure has been retained, including stone walls, arched windows and metal supports, all characteristic of early 20th-century engineering. The architectural intervention introduced modern materials and sustainable solutions, resulting in a space that honours both memory and innovation. Inside, the layout has been redesigned to accommodate spacious exhibition areas and educational activity zones. Natural light is used effectively through restored skylights and windows, and efficient systems for heating and energy highlight the building’s environmental ethos. The result is a harmonious, accessible and technologically equipped space capable of hosting a wide variety of audiences and events.

More context

The Museum of Water and Waste offers an engaging educational experience aimed at raising environmental awareness across all age groups. The visit unfolds through a series of interactive modules exploring the urban water cycle, waste management and sustainable practices. Information is presented in an accessible and immersive way, using digital technologies, sensory experiences and playful learning tools. Highlights include a simulation of water’s journey from collection to its return to nature, as well as various stations teaching how to reduce, reuse and recycle effectively. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, workshops, talks and educational programmes designed for schools, families and environmental professionals. With its strong educational and community focus, MAR is a space for active learning where sustainability becomes more than just a concept—it becomes a practical, transformative experience.
