In Carvalhal, in the municipality of Bombarral, Bacalhôa Buddha Eden turns Quinta dos Loridos into a vast open-air sculpture garden. Created in response to the destruction of the giant Buddhas in Afghanistan, it covers around 35 hectares and is presented as the largest oriental garden in Europe. Among lakes, pagodas, sculpted dragons and large golden Buddhas, the route gathers sculptures spread across the landscape, for which more than six thousand tons of marble and granite were used. The site is not limited to Buddhist imagery: it also includes a modern and contemporary sculpture garden and another devoted to African Shona sculpture from Zimbabwe. The scale of the place and the alternation of water, vegetation and stone create a very distinctive landscape, where art and nature coexist with deliberate calm, in a place born from a cultural response to destruction.

Why it matters

Bacalhôa Buddha Eden is one of the largest oriental gardens in Europe, located in the wine-growing region of Quinta dos Loridos, in Bombarral, about 45 minutes from Lisbon. This serene and artistic haven was conceived by José Berardo, a well-known businessman and art collector, as a response to the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001. With a desire to create a place of peace and harmony, Berardo began constructing the garden in 2007, aiming to provide a spiritual refuge and space for contemplation that honours various Eastern traditions and philosophies. Bacalhôa Buddha Eden celebrates cultural diversity, where Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu elements coexist harmoniously. As you stroll through its 35 hectares, you are invited to reflect on spirituality, art, and nature. Since its inauguration, the space has become a point of interest for both tourists and locals, offering a unique cultural immersion experience.

Architecture and history

The garden is filled with imposing and intricate sculptures, ranging from statues of Buddha and pagodas to stone-carved dragons and terracotta soldiers. The central piece of Bacalhôa Buddha Eden is undoubtedly the enormous golden Buddha statue, surrounded by a tranquil lake filled with koi fish, symbolising peace and abundance. Throughout the path, hundreds of statues made from various materials like stone, marble, and bronze are strategically placed, creating an atmosphere of peace and reflection. One of the most impressive sections is the replica of 700 terracotta soldiers, inspired by the famous Xi'an army in China. These warriors, lined up in rows, evoke the grandeur of ancient Chinese civilisation and its deep connection with spirituality. The lush vegetation plays a crucial role in the visual and sensory experience of Bacalhôa Buddha Eden. Among the sculptures, you'll find exotic trees and plants, along with lakes and bridges, transforming the space into an authentic utopia. The harmonious use of the natural landscape and Eastern architectural elements creates a unique and memorable aesthetic.
